The arts are essential in the development of all people, and play an important part of the human experience. The arts provide a foundation for the kind of literacy students must have to communicate and work successfully in our ever-changing media, technology, and information age. Our planet is becoming a cyber-world more than ever, and the arts are needed by our young people as a forum for safe expression, communication, exploration, imagination, and cultural and historical understanding. They teach students how they might express their own feelings and experiences through painting and drawing, as well as other fine arts. Brain research confirms that Arts education strengthens student problem-solving and critical thinking skills, adding to overall academic achievement, school success, and preparation for the work world. For some students Art is their motivation for going to school, and is an area where they have success and excel, providing an important balance in their total educational experience. Students who actively participate in some form of art — whether it be painting, acting, music, etc. — perform better in other subjects than students who don't participate in art. Art provides students an opportunity to create and do, which can be a refreshing break from studying. All that said, the arts develop self-confidence, self-discipline, and persistence in individuals. Students develop crucial skills in decision-making, leadership, clear communication and complex problem solving while working with others. In conclusion, art education supports not only intellectual and educational development, but also personal and social development. This website is developed to promote art and the artists that create it. Chi-gems would like to support the arts and the development of these creative individuals and help them continue their education through our scholarships and provide the venue to display their work in our gallery for promotional purposes. We also aim to educate and inspire with articles, books and events. Best Regards, V.M. Pijlman, President
